FAQ’S FOR RailJourners

   Q. As a single traveler, do I have to have a single room or is it possible to share a room with another traveler?

  A.  If you will indicate to us that you would like to share a room, we will put you in touch with someone who has made the same request, to discuss compatibility.

  Q.  What type of clothing should I bring?

  A.  The majority of our trips are during the spring or fall months in Europe.  Layering is always a good idea.  The lighter you travel the easier your trip will be.  Choosing clothing that is easy to pack and wear is helpful.  Comfortable walking shoes and an umbrella are also recommended.  The weather in Europe during these months tends to be much like that of the Midwest in the U.S.

  Q.  Are there ATM’s, and should I use a credit card or traveler’s checks.

  A.  Most places we will be traveling to will have ATM’s.  You should confirm with your bank that their ATM system is available in Europe.    Credit cards are accepted and a good way to pay for many things including meals and souvenirs.  Traveler’s checks are also fine and usually convert at a good exchange rate.  In short, all three methods of handling your money in Europe are acceptable.  Perhaps a combination of the above is the best bet.  It is not recommended to travel with a great deal of U.S. money, much like at home.

  Q.  Do I need a passport?

  A.  Yes, you will need a valid U.S. passport for travel in Europe.  Making a photocopy of your passport in case of emergency is a good idea.  A copy should be left at home and a copy should accompany you as you travel, separate from your passport.

Q.  What about health insurance in case of an emergency?

  A.  It is a good idea to check your health insurance policy before you depart for Europe.  Some policies do not cover expenses overseas.

  Q.  Do I need travel insurance?

  A.  Travel insurance is an option you may want to explore.  Many travelers today do opt for this security, though it is not a necessity.

  Q.  How will I meet up with the whole group when we arrive?

  A.  RailJourners will have a representative (usually Denis and Colleen Reed) at your destination airport.  Look for the RailJourner sign.

  Q.  What about an itinerary?

  A.  An itinerary will be mailed to you indicating the plans for each days activities and destinations.
